In South Africa, 1.2 million children do not receive regular or no school education.
We work to prepare young people for their future in your society.
Since our foundation in 2016, we have been pursuing the ‚Education for Children in South Africa‘ project, which is concerned with improving the school education of children in South Africa and improving their living conditions in the short and long term.

As the ‚rainbow nation‘ South Africa is made up of various social groups with different social problems, we decided to concentrate our further work on the region of KwaZulu-Natals, whose largest city is Durban. This is where the majority of the country’s black population lives and the region is one of the poorest in the country.
A question of equality
South Africa is the second largest economy in Africa. The country suffers from the consequences of apartheid. Since the end of this policy in 1994, it has made progress in many areas. South Africa’s Human Development Index (HDI) has improved in recent decades and in 2018 was 0.705 – rank 113 out of 189 countries (KwaZulu Natal region: 0.668).
The distribution of these achievements is poor, and especially among the black majority of the population, essential components for social life still do not reach them. Poverty, unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, violence, low life expectancy and health problems, especially HIV, characterise everyday life.
In South Africa, 20.4% of adults (14-49 years old) are affected by HIV, second in the world. In the KwaZulu-Natal region, where we are active, the prevalence is as high as 25.8%. Young women are four times more affected than men of the same age. 1.7 million children in South Africa are already AIDS orphans (UNAIDS 2018).
Development work
In Southfarika we partner with schools, non-profit organisations and people from civil society to plan, implement and evaluate our projects.
It is our approach that development work should look at people. When promoting development, we focus on existing resources of the community as well as on the children’s abilities. Our work aims at not looking at social determinants of the community in isolation, but to improve them as a whole (e.g. education, work, nutrition, a healthy living environment). We rely on participatory decision-making with partners and local people. In the best case, our work helps the people we reach to become independent, i.e. to be able to help themselves in the future.
Living role model
A role model for a successful way out of poverty is Balungile Gumede, a board member and founding member, who grew up in a poor township in Durban, South Africa, and now lives and works in Hamburg and supports her family in Africa. Her story should motivate young people to take advantage of educational opportunities and to see the ‚impossible‘ from a different light.

Wir arbeiten daran, junge Menschen auf Ihre Zukunft in Ihrer Gesellschaft vorzubereiten.
Seit unserer Gründung im Jahr 2016 verfolgen wie das Projekt ‚Bildung für Kinder in Südafrika‘ das sich mit der Verbesserung der schulischen Bildung von Kindern in Südafrika befasst und ihre Lebensumstände kurzfristig sowie langfristig verbessert.
Ziele:

Da die ‚Regenbogennation‘ Südafrika aus diversen Gesellschaftsgruppen mit unterschiedlichen sozialen Problemen ist, entschieden wir uns, unsere weitere Arbeit auf die Region KwaZulu-Natals zu konzentrieren, dessen größte Stadt Durban ist. Hier lebt ein Großteil der schwarzen Bevölkerung des Landes und die Region gehört zu den ärmlichsten des Landes.
Eine Frage der Verteilung
Südafrika ist die zweitgrößte Volkswirtschaft Afrikas. Das Land leidet unter den Folgen der Apartheid. Seit dem Ende dieser Politik 1994 hat es Fortschritte in vielen Bereichen gemacht. Südafrikas Index der menschlichen Entwicklung (HDI) hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten verbessert und lag 2018 bei 0,705 – Rang 113 von 189 Ländern (Region KwaZulu Natal: 0,668).
Die Verteilung dieser Errungenschaften ist schlecht und gerade bei der schwarzen Bevölkerungsmehrheit kommen essentielle Bausteine für das soziale Leben immer noch nicht an. Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit, mangelnde Bildungschancen, Gewalt, eine geringe Lebenserwartung und Gesundheitsprobleme, allen voran HIV, prägen den Alltag.
In Südafrika sind 20,4% der Erwachsenen (14-49 Jahre) von HIV betroffen, weltweit Platz zwei. In der Region KwaZulu-Natal, in der wir tätig werden, liegt die Prävalenz sogar bei 25,8 %. Junge Frauen sind viermal so stark betroffen wie gleichaltrige Männer. 1,7 Millionen Kinder in Südafrika sind bereits Aids-Waisen (UNAIDS 2018).
Entwicklungsarbeit
Es ist unser Ansatz, dass Entwicklungsarbeit den Menschen betrachten sollte. Bei der Förderung stellen wir bestehende Ressourcen der Community sowie Fähigkeiten der Kinder in den Fokus. Unser Arbeit zielt darauf ab, soziale Determinanten der Community nicht isoliert zu betrachten, sondern insgesamt zu verbessern (z.B. Bildung, Arbeit, Ernährung, ein gesundes Lebensumfeld). Wir setzen auf partizipative Entscheidungsfindung mit Partnern und Menschen vor Ort. Im besten Falle hilft unser Wirken den Menschen, die wir erreichen, eigenständig zu werden, sich zukünftig also selbst helfen zu können.
Vorbilder leben
Ein Vorbild für ein erfolgreiches Gelingen des Weges aus der Armut ist Vorstands- und Gründungsmitglied Balungile Gumede, die selbst in einem ärmlichen Township in Durban, Südafrika aufwuchs und heute in Hamburg lebt und arbeitet sowie ihre Familie in Afrika trägt. Ihre Geschichte soll junge Menschen dazu motivieren, Bildungschancen wahrzunehmen und das ‚Unmögliche‘ aus anderem Licht zu sehen.
Since 2016 we have been working closely with the Phila Combined Primary School in the Umlazi Township in Durban (Qintil 3). The school is located in a poor community and is known to us personally through our board member Balungile Gumede. We personally supervise the implementation of our projects and are in close contact with the management of the school to monitor our work in the long term.

Unser Flagschiff
Seit 2016 arbeiten wir eng mit der Phila Combined Primary Schule im Umlazi Township in Durban (Qintil 3) zusammen. Die Schule liegt in einer ärmlichen Community und ist uns durch unser Vorstandsmitglied Balungile Gumede persönlich bekannt. Wir betreuen die Umsetzung unserer Projekte persönlich und stehen in engem Kontakt mit der Leitung der Schule um unser Wirken langfristig zu monitoren.
